A full-colour, hard-cover, 185-page coffee table book featuring 200+ historic photographs and two dozen original oil paintings by Bahamian artist Alton Lowe.

Visitors often describe New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay as a charming fishing village, its narrow streets, clapboard homes and colourful flowers reminiscent of a New England town. But beneath this sweet façade is a past of piracy, poverty and privilege.

Hints of New Plymouth’s history are all around. A rusted anchor at Settlement Point. Two cannon standing guard on the public dock. Broken tombstones on the beach.  An old jail with stairs that lead nowhere.

For more than a thousand years, settlers have come here, drawn by the safety of the land and the bounty of the sea. And as the waves contour the shore, so have these migrants shaped this tiny cay.

By fate and occasionally by force, most were carried away.  A resilient few remained. This is their story.

Cost: $79.

Welcome to the New, Improved Little House by the Ferry

You know the saying, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans?” Well, without warning, a whole pile of unplanned life landed in my lap over the past month.

October ended on a high note – I attended the Writer’s Digest Novel Writing Conference, where I not only made some fantastic new writer friends (hello, Underdogs!) but I found the inspiration to finish a novel I’ve been working on for more than a decade and to tackle National Blog Post Month (NaBloPoMo.)

Introducing the New and Improved Little House by the Ferry

My writing conference pals, left to right: Lauriane, Kara, Roslynn, Janet, Amy and me.

Late one night halfway through the conference, however, I was updating something here on the blog. I hit a wrong button and accidentally switched my WordPress theme – that’s basically the layout of the blog. Of course, the new layout was nothing like the old one, meaning that if you clicked onto the blog, all you’d see was a messy jumble of text and photos.

Pineapples as Christmas Trees?

It’s no secret that I love pineapple-themed decor. Perhaps it hearkens back to my Loyalist roots, since pineapples were a common Colonial symbol of friendship and hospitality.

Pineapples as Christmas Trees?

Tom and I used pineapples as the motif on our wedding invitations. I recently purchased a gorgeous antique pineapple to frame and hang at Fish Hooks. And I’m on a mission to find the perfect pineapple finial for our front gate post.

But has anyone else noticed that lately, pineapples are being used to decorate in new and very creative ways?

With A Name Like CheapOAir…

Yes. I know. The name “CheapOAir” should have been a clue. But my husband was relying on the Smuckers principle (You know… “With a name like Smuckers, it’s got to be good.”)

Tom figured a company called CheapO would surely be motivated to go out of its way to prove itself. And it’s true, he did save a few bucks booking through them. But we had no way of knowing at that time just what dealing with CheapOAir would cost us.

Introducing the LHBTF 2018 Green Turtle Cay Calendar

Some of you may recall that last fall, I printed off a small quantity of 2017 Green Turtle Cay calendars as an experiment. They proved to be quite popular, and quickly sold out.

For those who’ve asked, I’m happy to tell you that yes, there will be a 2018 Green Turtle Cay calendar. In fact, it’s available as of today!  The 2018 Green Turtle Cay Calendar is now available.
