If you’ve been reading Little House by the Ferry for a while, you know I started it in 2013 to track our progress as Tom and I restored Fish Hooks.
In the years since, we’ve written about all sorts of things, though for the most part, our focus remained Green Turtle Cay.
But on September 1, 2019, everything changed. Dorian – the most powerful hurricane ever to make landfall in the Bahamas – took direct aim at Abaco, devastating many communities, including Hope Town, Marsh Harbour, Guana Cay, Man-O-War, Treasure Cay, Green Turtle Cay and Cooper’s Town.
Hundreds were killed or remain missing. Many Abaconians lost everything. Almost everyone lost something. It was evident that our Abaco family and friends faced a monumental task in rebuilding their lives, livelihoods and communities. Tom and I knew we wanted to help, but how?
Then, on November 13, 2019, a Facebook friend shared a post by Mrs. Louise Reckley.
I’m paraphrasing a bit here, but in essence, her message was this: “Everyone has a part to play in the rebuilding of Abaco. We need all hands on deck. Find your place, no matter how big or small, and get to work.”
Mrs. Reckley’s words stuck with me, and for much of the past 13 months, my focus has been on two things — helping our Abaconian family and friends recover and rebuild, and figuring out how Tom and I can best support that recovery long-term.
We realized that thanks to all of you who read and follow this blog (we’ve had more than 450,000 visitors and 1.06 million page views to date!), it’s become a wonderful way to share timely and much-needed information with local residents, second homeowners, visitors and potential visitors.
And we realized that, along with supporting our family and friends in Green Turtle Cay, we wanted to help those in other parts of Abaco recover and rise.
So we got to work. We’ve spent the past months expanding the scope of this blog and we’re renaming and redesigning the site to reflect its broader focus.
I’ll share more details in the days ahead, but just wanted to give you a heads up that big change is just over the horizon. We hope you’ll be as excited about it as we are.
