Are you one of those people who loves the ocean? Who feels more alive and at peace near the water? If, like me, the beach is your happy place, a recently published book may help explain why.
Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On or Under the Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected and Better At What You Do says that humans are wired to react favourably to water — that it relaxes us, reduces stress and anxiety and increases insight, clarity and creativity.
According to the book’s author, marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols, the simple sounds and visuals of the ocean give our overstimulated senses a much-needed rest. The repetitive motion and sound of waves can induce a mild meditative state, he says, increasing awareness and focus and allowing our brains to function more effectively.
What if you’re nowhere near the ocean? According to the author, you can achieve many of the same positive effects from a simple shower. (To this I can attest — the shower is where I do some of my best thinking!)
You can learn more about Blue Mind in this Huffington Post article. And here’s a bit of video I shot at Bita Bay the other day. Let me know whether you feel more relaxed and creative after watching it.
oh yes, stayed at Bita Bay house for 2 weeks. love, love GTC. coming back in May. will be so happy. the ocean is my happy place.
I feel much better. The ocean is truly a necessity in my life. I am not happy without it. Thank you for the video.
Hi, Shelley. Glad you liked the video. I feel the same way about the ocean — nothing like it to clear your head and rejuvenate your soul. 🙂
I’d like to be there.
